Im from a little bit of everywhere. My family moved a lot when I was a child so Ive lived in New Jersey, New York, California, Virginia and even Pakistan. Southern California is the first place thats really felt completely like home since weve been here the longest, but as a child of the Pakistani diaspora the where are you from? question is a difficult one to answer. I stayed close by for college and majored in biology. I chose biology because our school made it really difficult to take all the premed requirements while having any other major. In a perfect world I wouldve majored in psychology, sociology or something along those lines considering Im spending the rest of my life studying biology. Accepted: Where are you currently attending medical school? What year are you? Anum: I was lucky enough to stay in southern California for medical school and Im currently in my third year. The first two years of medical school were really difficult for me, and Im still struggling to get through step one, but being on rotations in the hospital has been absolutely amazing. My test anxiety didnt really show up until I started medical school so it wasnt as difficult as it probably would be for me now. The first time I failed an exam in medical school initially completely destroyed my confidence and I felt like I was the only one. I never expected my words to resonate with so many people but Im so grateful for the community weve created. Its gotten me through some of the darkest days. The skill can be developed without getting into depth. Also too quickly learning to be assertive is like learning to drive a car. Akin to putting an L plate on the car. The manager can give himself some time and space by practicing being assertive until he is comfortable, competent and confident. A key point to be noted is not whether the person is superior or subordinate to the other in the hierarchy, but whether one acts in a superior or inferior manner towards the other. The assertive style does not adopt the superior, the inferior, not the hopeless stance, but assumes that the two people are equal as people. Being assertive is essential and advantageous. In fact it brings in many benefits to the individual as well as the organization. The opportunities to use the assertion are to be recognised and the techniques well understood. But it takes time and effort. So all the more it is essential to make a start. Holding back everytime, regretting , blowing up and feeling guilty are potential assertive situations.
